Terror Human Rights
Dread Human Rights Has the ââ¬Å"war on terrorâ⬠upgraded or hurt human rights? In the expressions of Howard Zinn, student of history, writer, social extremist: How might you make a war on dread if war itself is fear based oppression? The war on or against psychological warfare keeps on pursuing as we talk about it and endeavor to discover answers for the approaching peril that compromises our human advancement in itself. The war on dread has been utilized as a weapon by governments around the globe to accomplish narrow minded thought processes, to fulfill self images and secure fates. There is no unmistakable adversary, and it is impossible that global psychological warfare can be finished by methods for war. Fear based oppression keeps on being an obscure adversary, without an unmistakable personality and that is the reason military attack like the ones over and over achieved by United States on effectively desolated nations isn't an answer. Fear based oppression is where the demonstrations of dread pull in the consideration of general society in an emotional way making a feeling of stun, wonder and extraordinary sorrow. Anyway it must be recalled that no war is right, no war merits the loss of our ethics as ind ividuals. In the current article, the contention that will be introduced is that the supposed ââ¬Ëwar on dread has hurt the human privileges of numerous everywhere throughout the world. The expression has been utilized to deny a great many individuals of their nobility, resources and life itself. The article endeavors to comprehend the topic of what number of rights can be surrendered for security of the countries that guarantee to have been assaulted and have consequently pursued the war on dread. Fear mongering in the cutting edge sense is brutality or other unsafe acts submitted (or undermined) against regular people for political or other ideological objectives. Most meanings of psychological warfare incorporate just those demonstrations which are planned to make dread or ââ¬Ëterror, are executed for an ideological objective instead of a solitary assault), and intentionally target or negligence the security of non soldiers. Any type of military activity can be named fear based oppression. The adage that, ââ¬Å"One keeps an eye on fear monger is another keeps an eye on opportunity fighterâ⬠, has been the premise of endeavors to legitimize progressive developments which have been named as demonstrations of dread. It was during the French Revolution that the words fear based oppressor and psychological oppression got mainstream. The word fear based oppression started in 1795 during the rule of dread by the progressive government during the French Revolution. Psychological oppressor acts were submitted so as to pick up consideration of the world. For instance, in the Munich Olympics in 1972, 11 Israelis were murdered by the Black September Organization and despite the fact that the eleven slaughtered were the prompt victims the genuine impact was felt by almost 1 billion individuals viewing the news on the planet. Dread has been proceeding over the ages in some structure. What is viewed as a wrongdoin g by some is the demonstration of insurance of ones own character and culture by the other. In this sense, the latest occasion that totally dazed the world was the besieging of the two world exchange community towers on September 11, 2001. The world viewed with incredulity as United States confronted assault on its own dirt. What followed and proceeds is a case of the ââ¬Å"war on terrorâ⬠, as determined and concentrated on by George Bush, President, United States of America. The utilization of the word war here isn't just deceptive however backward. As indicated by the US understanding, fear based oppression incorporates just the counter state viciousness acts like September 11, 2001. The inquiry here that can be advanced is then shouldn't something be said about state brutality, shouldn't something be said about the utilization of overabundance police power, the utilization of military/paramilitary in an aimless way. The morning of September 11, 2001, was per day that will stay scratched in our brains perpetually as the occasion killed 2973 honest individuals whose human right to life had been shortened. Anyway the world must recollect what followed and proceeds as you read this is likewise gross infringement of human rights. While trying to battle the fear which caused September 11, United States government has been completing slaughters on guiltless regular folks in both Afghanistan and Iraq. In endeavoring to discover the foe, and annihilate it, the US strategies and self-assertive utilization of military power has slaughtered a lot more individuals as well as has brought about a portion of the most noticeably terrible human rights infringement saw in mankind's history. The quick impact of September 11 was the boundless victimization Islamic Muslims particularly youthful guys. The world has stayed a quiet onlooker to the means taken by US which has utilized giving since quite a while ago denied ââ¬Å"freedomâ⬠to regular folks in Iraq and Afghanistan as a reason to enter these nations. The explanation accommodated the attack has been the liberation or the upliftment of the individuals in these two nations. Be that as it may, rather than upliftment these nations have been desolated all things considered and are kept on being looted. Human rights have become a last issue with individuals endeavoring to remain alive among consistent bombings and military attacks. The world has been a quiet observer for almost five years after the falling of the two towers to United States government that has been making strides, utilizing power to accomplish illusioned intentions and activities totally contradicted to the premise of International Law. The option to reasonable preliminary is a fundamental human right, developed to shield people from limitation or hardshi p of essential rights and opportunities, for example, right to life and freedom. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights accommodates this privilege in Article 10. Alongside this the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) accommodates the option to reasonable preliminary in Article 14. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), additionally incorporates the option to be liberated from self-assertive capture and detention(Article 9), the option to be available at trial(Article 21), the option to be liberated from torture(Article 7) and the privilege to appeal(Article 26). The four Geneva Conventions of 1949, which secure non military personnel populaces and those battling in threats, essentially during worldwide outfitted clashes yet in addition during inner clashes, for example, common wars, contain arrangements to guarantee a reasonable preliminary. Anyway legitimizing of the Patriot Act places this in a vast inquiry. This demonstration is decisively against different rights secured and ensured by the Constitution of United States and different global records such like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Convention against torment and All types of Racial Discrimination. The Patriot Act permits non-residents to be kept without charge without an option to reasonable preliminary and be held in jail uncertainly whenever sentenced. This Act additionally permits the legislature in United States to investigate subtleties of the lives of the residents in the nation without earlier consent. This incorporates, observing of messages, wiretapping, watching out for property acquisitions, instructive just as money related records. This Act is plainly against the privilege to security and permits the legislature to self-assertively meddle. The United States governments acknowledgment to the Military Commissions Act can be viewed as a significant advance towards human rights infringement in the progressing ââ¬Å"war on terrorâ⬠. Acknowledgment of such reports which permit the utilization of uncensored power are against the essential thought of International Law. Under the rubric of the ââ¬Å"war on terrorâ⬠, the United States government has confined a great many individuals in their own region and around the globe. A dominant part of the prisoners are denied access to a reasonable preliminary and are held without a charge. There is an away from of the essential thing option to fair treatment, which is an unmistakable right ensured by the US Constitution. Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib recount to an account of torment so insidious that it shakes the establishment of human rights. There have been disclosures of fierceness in these detainment facilities as beatings, sexual mortification and techniques for torment which are practically dreamlike to a typical individual. Guantanamo Bay, the acclaimed jail outside regions of United States has given the world photos of the torment inside the ââ¬Å"war on terrorâ⬠. It has been and keeps on being an uncivilized spot. The conditional proof of torment at Guantanamo Bay is fitting and all around recorded. The most disheartening disclosure is the way that the techniques for torment were empowered and proliferated by the Military Commission which gave acknowledgment to such cruel treatment. Despite the fact that the detainment at the Guantanamo Bay jail is plainly against the articles of the Geneva Conventions, and especially Article 75 of the First Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventio n of 1977 which expresses that constraining a detainee to admit in unlawful, the barrier of United States government to the confinement remains that the meaning of detainees in Guantanamo Bay incorporates adversary soldiers and not detainees of war; consequently the Geneva Convention doesn't have any significant bearing. Plainly Guantanamo was picked as a base for torment in order to hold prisoners past the span of the United States just as International Law, which obviously expresses that the utilization of torment and brutal or corrupting treatment is restricted. Regardless of how one characterizes the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, the reality fundamental the entire situation remains that twistedness and embarrassment are grinding away in each cell in this jail by probably the most grounded government on the planet. Guantanamo Bay has gotten probably the most grounded image of human rights misuse completed in an arranged way by the United States government, and five years of such rebellion and killing is too long an opportunity to go unstopped. President Bush undoubtedly affirmed the way that there are mystery detainment facilities of the CIA in different nations from the United States soil. The reasonable sign here is that by one way or another US needs to take its suspects past the compass of the

The Bells Toll For Her - Literature Essay Samples
ââ¬Å"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent. . . therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.â⬠ââ¬âJohn Donne, Devotions Upon Emergent OccasionsThe year is 1923. In the suburbs of London, Virginia Woolf sits down to write Mrs. Dalloway. The Great War has been over for five years, but its memory still hauntsãâ¬â¬millions. More than nine hundred and fifty thousand young Englishmen lie in their gravesââ¬âinfinite bells, surely, have mourned these dead. In Mrs. Dalloway, Woolf echoes these bells through the constant striking of the hours. But the bells in Woolfââ¬â¢s work are not merely markers of time. Particularly in the novelââ¬â¢s post-WWI setting, they are a motif for death and its ineluctable approach. From the very opening pages of her work, Woolf attributes a certain je ne sais quoi to the bells that strike the hours. The protagonist Clarissa Dalloway, as she walks down the street, affirms ââ¬Å"a particular hush, or solemnity; an indescribable pause; a suspenseâ⬠¦ before Big Ben strikesâ⬠(4). Clarissa anticipates the bells; and the passage immediately following reads ââ¬Å"There! Out it boomed. First a warning, musical; then the hour, irrevocableâ⬠(4). What could this description signify? In the beginning of the novel, it is perhaps difficult to grasp an interpretation. To approach the bells of Mrs. Dalloway, we must first study their three different aspectsââ¬âand images with which they are associated. The first significance of the bells involve the unavoidable passage of time, which Woolf evokes through images that areââ¬âquite literallyââ¬âstriking. The bells are ââ¬Å"directâ⬠and ââ¬Å"downrightâ⬠(48), ââ¬Å"with overpowering directness and dignityâ⬠(118); they ââ¬Å"counse[l] submissionâ⬠and ââ¬Å"uph[old] authorityâ⬠(102). Woolfââ¬â¢s language is clear: the hours that toll carry the same note of certitude and finality as a hammer closing an auction, or a bomb destroying a target. They are direct, powerful, and ââ¬Å"irrevocable.â⬠Much in the same tone, Woolf associates this potent striking of the hour with death. When Peter leaves Clarissa house, he hears ââ¬Å"St. Margaretââ¬â¢s. . . stroke of the hourâ⬠: ââ¬Å"the sudden loudness of the final stroke tolled for death,â⬠and Peter imagines ââ¬Å"Clarissa falling where she stoodâ⬠(50). It is as if the bells fell Clarissaââ¬âor as if they toll for her death. Here Woolf revives the idea of the irrevocability of the hours; for Peter Walsh exclaims, ââ¬Å"No! No! She is not dead! I am not old. . .â⬠(50), as if to fight the inevitable passage of timeââ¬âthe passage towards death. Frequently indeed, the idea of death surrounds the bells that announce the hours. The following passage, however, addresses death in a different way from the above: It was precisely twelve oââ¬â¢clock; twel ve by Big Ben; whose strokeâ⬠¦ blent with that of other clocks, mixed in a thin ethereal way with the clouds and wisps of smoke, and died up there with the seagullsâ⬠(94).Death, here does not evoke the striking image of ââ¬Å"Clarissa fallingâ⬠(50). Rather, its ââ¬Å"etherealâ⬠mà ©lange with ââ¬Å"clouds and wisps of smokeâ⬠suggests a more ephemeral representation of death: like the bellsââ¬â¢ reverberations, fading away gently yet surely among the seagulls. Thus the second significance of the bells portrays death in a more melancholic light. It is under this light that ââ¬Å"the sound of the half hour dies awayâ⬠(103), and ââ¬Å"the sound of the bell flooded the room with its melancholy waveâ⬠(118). Woolf evokes the sound and echo of the London bells thatââ¬âhere, instead of adumbrating the approach of deathââ¬âinduce the reader to ââ¬Å"hearâ⬠an almost forlorn dolor. This dolor, precisely, takes on its full meaning in the novelââ¬â¢s post-WWI setting. Although the Great War has ceased its fires for five years, its survivors have hardly forgotten its horrors. For some unfortunate, besides, the war still ragesââ¬âas Clarissa remarks, ââ¬Å"the war was over, except for some.â⬠Mrs. Foxcroft, for example, mourns the loss of her ââ¬Å"nice boys,â⬠as does Lady Bexborough that of ââ¬Å"John, her favouriteâ⬠(5). For many, indeed, the bells still toll poignantly. Perhaps the remembrance of the war manifests itself most clearly in the character of Septimus Warren Smith.Septimus fought in World War I; he has survived, but not without scars. To begin with, he suffers from a form of shell shock: an indifference to all sensations. For Septimus, ââ¬Å"the intoxication of languageââ¬âAnthony and Cleopatraha[s] shriveled utterlyâ⬠(88); ââ¬Å"Even tasteâ⬠¦ had no relish to himâ⬠(87). Hallucinations pursue him, too: he sees ghosts of the dead, often of his good frie nd Evans who died in the war (70). Clearly, Septimus is a martyr of the War, and he must moreover deal with its aftermathsââ¬ânamely, the visits of Dr. Holmes, the ââ¬Å"repulsive bruteâ⬠who attempts to cure him of his war scars (92). Eventually, as all martyrs do, Septimus jumps from a window to his death. It is through Septimus that we remark the bellsââ¬â¢ third significance: in tolling for death, they represent a relief from all worldly difficulties. In the first pages of the novel, Clarissa reads a line from Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Cymbeline that begins thus: ââ¬Å"Fear no more the heat oââ¬â¢ the sun /Nor the furious winterââ¬â¢s ragesâ⬠(IV, ii). These lines occur in Cymbeline as a funeral chant; they address the character Cloton, who longer needs fear any ââ¬Å"heatâ⬠or ââ¬Å"rageâ⬠of the mortal world. In the same way, death protects Septimus from any further suffering. That is why, at his death, his wife Rezia hears the striking of six o ââ¬â¢clock and remarks ââ¬Å"how sensible the sound wasâ⬠(150). The bells announce death, but they are somehow sensible, even comforting. To conclude, then, the bells in Mrs. Dalloway are perhaps best described by the ââ¬Å"late clockâ⬠that rings ââ¬Å"volubly and troublouslyâ⬠(128). They are a motif for death and its steady advent, but the novelââ¬â¢s setting enriches the motif to contain at several levels of meaning; thus when the bells speak, they are voluble and troubling. Perhaps the mysterious description of the bells in Mrs. Dallowayââ¬â¢s openingââ¬âmentioned earlierââ¬âis founded upon the image of an air raid: the ââ¬Å"particular hushâ⬠evokes the calm before the storm; then, ââ¬Å"Out it boomed,â⬠the bombs drop, and the ââ¬Å"leaden circlesâ⬠dissolve in the air, ââ¬Å"irrevocableâ⬠(4). Death hangs in the air. Thus the bells toll, not only for the dead or Septimus, but also for Clarissa, and Peter, and all En glish who underwent the strains and losses of World War I. The bells toll for Virginia Woolf, too. As she wrote Mrs. Dalloway, listening to the hours come and go, one wonders if she envisioned her own death, to ensue some eighteen years later.

Richard Robinson, the President and CEO of Scholastic Inc., the worldââ¬â¢s largest publisher and distributor of childrenââ¬â¢s books, said that a great childrenââ¬â¢s text contains a simple and original idea, is written with humour and makes the world more interesting. Despite being published in 1928, A.A. Milneââ¬â¢s The House At Pooh Corner remains a highly effective childrenââ¬â¢s text. The text meets the criteria set out by Richard Robinson and it has been able to do so through its good uses of literary elements such as style, themes and characters. Some examples of this can be linked to the works of various developmental theorists such as Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky and Erik Erikson. The themes of this text are very simple but are important and easily conveyed to the young readers. Some of the themes include sharing, cooperation and generosity. In Chapter 1, Eeyore feels sorry for himself and thinks that ââ¬Å"The others will be sorry if Iââ¬â¢m getting myself all coldâ⬠¦ one of them will begin to say to himself: ââ¬ËEeyore canââ¬â¢t be so very much too Hot about three oââ¬â¢clock in the morning.ââ¬â¢ And then it will Get About. And theyââ¬â¢ll be Sorry.â⬠(P9-10) But on the contrary, Pooh and Piglet realise that Eeyore does not have a house and they were quite worried so they decided to build a house for him. ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ve been thinking of Eeyoreâ⬠¦ poor Eeyore has nowhere to liveâ⬠¦ You have a house and I have a houseâ⬠¦ poor Eeyore has nothingâ⬠¦ Letââ¬â¢s build him a house.â⬠(P7) This is a perfect example of the the aforementioned themes where Pooh and Piglet work together to help and care for E eyore. The remarks by Eeyore are very self-centred because he is believing that everyone should be focusing on him and that they should feel the same way he does. On the other hand, Pooh and Piglet are not so worried about themselves but are thinking about Eeyore instead. These two phenomena are described as egocentrism and ââ¬Å"decenteringâ⬠respectively in the Pre-Operations Stage of Jean Piagetââ¬â¢s Stages of Cognitive Development. While the idea of contrasting right and wrong has been a popular theme in literature, it is most noticeably show in Mary Shelleyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein. Frankenstein follows the story of a young scientist who tries his hand at God and, to his misfortune, has to deal with the consequences. Victor Frankenstein is a promising young scientist in the field of chemistry, until he creates life in an inanimate body and the Creature he makes wreaks havoc on all he holds dear. Between the several characteristics and journeys undertaken in Frankenstein, there are distinctive elements that can be contrasted which enhance the importance of themes within the novel. First, one of the most recurring themes in Frankenstein is alienation and seclusion felt by theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦If he is a monster, it is society that made him so. He is, then, only a metaphor of a monsterâ⬠(Bissonette 103). Bissonette chooses to highlight the effect society has on the Creature and how the Creature transitions from good because it epitomizes the issue of acceptance and love within the novel . Also a major contrast between Victor Frankenstein and the Creature is their purpose for living. Victor, despite making major breakthroughs in chemistry and making a name for himself, wants to be remembered as the one who can reanimate a dead corpse. Victorââ¬â¢s objective is to create a creature that, ââ¬Å"would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to meâ⬠(Shelley 33). This overreaching ambition is the reason Victor creates the Creature and, also, his fatal flaw. On a more humble side, the only thing the Creature wants from the world is to be loved and accepted. In the beginning, the Creature is born innocent and pure but eventually, through the vices and cruel experiences of society, turns into the cold monster known by the end of the novel. The Creature is able to see the love and reverence people are capable of having for one another, but knows he can never be a part of it, ââ¬Å"[t]he mild exhortations of the old m an, and the lively conversations of the loved Felix, were not for meâ⬠(Shelley 84).
